The USB Storage driver doesn't do anything in terms of 'read-only' vs
'read-write' -- it relies on the device to provide that information. It is
quite possible that clearing pictures from the camera requires a
proprietary extension to the protocol (that is, if it's even possible to
clear them remotely).
