The policy and rc.usb scripts at the linux-usb project
have been updated, and so has the Java USB Daemon. It's
worth taking another look now, if "some weekend" you had
planned to give it a look. Go to the "USB Daemon" section:
http://jusb.sourceforge.org/
There you'll find instructions about how to download and
install (into /etc/usb) the latest Java USBD support, along
with recent linux-usb@sourceforge usbd scripts. (That's
the "jusbd-0.2.2.tgz" file; "tools" module.)
To my surprise and pleasure, it turns out this runs on
RedHat 6.0 (and 6.2) with only the addition of a 2.4-ish
USB-aware kernel ... because /usr/bin/java there calls
Kaffe, which has run this code just fine so far!!
Please give this a try. The goal is to make sure that
it's easy for 2.4 based systems to "Plug'n'Play" load
and configure their drivers, so testing the scripts is
important. (Try with kUSBD if that's more your style!)
