Thanks for your help Tim, I changed my XF86Config-4 to default colour depth of 16bit and all movies work fine now. I can't really notice any difference between 16bit and 24bit, but just out of interest, is there a way to change between the two without altering XF86Config-4 and restarting X? (In case I decide I want 24bit colour for anything).
