Ooops missed the bit about running linux, there are some vax machines that can run linux, checkout http://linux-vax.sourceforge.net/. The vax port is still in early work and it's not just grab a cd and install a complete system. Unfortunately a 3800 is not one of them, NetBSD does run on them however. (I'm assuming it's a MicroVAX 3800 your talking about here) The 3800 has a KA650 CPU I believe, which is supported in the Linux port, it might just be all the QBUS stuff that is not yet supported. :D
