My youngest son was complaining that his PII-400 with a 4Mb video card was not cutting the mustard for the games he wanted to play. I was close to spending more money and building a PC for him but decided to "swap" PC's.
I have installed RedHat8 on the Compaq DeskPro (after replacing the faulty Ram I bought) and this room no longer has Windows. There are some frustrations though. I had to manually configure the sound card after searching the net for instructions - nothing too major although I would had expected an ES1869 card to be detected automatically. I have been using the latest version of Evolution for some time (the latest version fixed the "not emptying trash folder" problem. Now with Redhat8 I have an earlier version again. To update Evolution I need to use the "Red Carpet Installer". I had been using this installer very successfully with Redhat 7.3 but the package does not work with RH8. The Ximian web site does not yet have a version of Red Carpet for RH8. I was using Kopete for instant messaging (after reading a rave from Jeremy). I too liked it but now when I try to install it on RH8 it wants some dependencies sorted out. I have installed RH8 with the Custom,Everything option and I am not sure how to satisfy the dependencies. When these things are sorted out I will be very happy and my next project will be to find which programme to use to edit my web pages. I created them in Dreamweaver but now know that the Flash buttons and Java applets do not work on a default Linux installation so I will simplify it (hopefully using a Linux program) Well there you are. Its off my chest and probably bored anybody who read this email to the end. -- Robert Fisher http://www.fisherfamily.orcon.net.nz (I am going to modify my page without the Flash components)
