Of course, you'd need to remove the root= option from lilo.conf, since lilo will still pass that, and it overrides the rdev of the kernel. You do that, sure, when you dd the kernel to a floppy as your boot floppy :) (although, I use grub on the floppy, so I can pass it arguments as well...)
