My 5MX died about two months ago when the screen cable broke and I miss it
terribly... an amazing machine. I have held off replacing it in the hope
that the Zaurus would fit the bill but the one that looks the closest, a
thing called the SL-C700 is still a Japan only model. I have seen tham
available on US websites for US$699 as imports which is a bit much to pay
for something that still might not do the job... Psions are almost
impossible to find in NZ though so the question is how long can I hold
out...

Hi John,
Would you also consider buying some non-Linux PDA on which Linux can
be installed? The Psion Linux has made some progress, and the Psions
(5mx and 5mx pro) have a really good keyboard for that size. And they
store all the OS on a flash card, anyway. The only reason why I have
not yet tried Linux on my Psion is that the CF card is full with all
the other (EPOC) stuff I have. But with a sufficiently large CF card,
it is even possible to install both EPOC and Linux on one card and
boot the machine with either OS.
Take a look at http://www.psilinux.org
In Europe, 2nd hand Psion 5mx pro are sold for an equivalent of 500 $
NZD, here you may have a hard time locating one at all. The only extra
hardware you need to get Linux running really well on it would be a
larger CF card.
There is one point I am not quite sure about concerning Linux and
PDAs: Normally PDAs do not have a hard disk. If you want swap space,
it has to be in the flash memory... So you don't want any swap, which
means make sure all your OS + GUI + apps fit into RAM before you buy a
machine. I think there are some comments on this on the Psilinux web
server.
Cheers,
Helmut.
