Yes, but this may take some work.  there are several audio servers
available for linux.  esound and arts are common, and can reside over
the default kernel audio drivers (for kernels <= 2.4.x).  KDE uses arts
and gnome uses esound (I think.  I'm not a gnome user.)

Modern sound installations based on alsa (default in the 2.5 and 2.6
kernels series) now have support for a dmix device, which acts as a
multiplexer for the audio device.

In addition, some sound cards have hardware mixers built in, and can
support multiple channels without software assistance.

I can try to help you with more specific answers (to the best of my
ability), but before that can happen, I'd need to know what your current
audio setup is.

hints: alsa will create a directory called /proc/asound and use modules
beginning with snd-<driver name>
