Apparently Yast2's license just passes. So you can hardly say that they were always open source. Unless of course open source just means to you your allowed to look at the source code. Note that there is only one Distro using YaST SUSE.

Next Volker will be calling Windows OSS, because (some of) the code was posted on the net recently.
