I would recommend the Canon Powershot A70 it works fine with linux and takes compact flash cards which are the cheapest also pickup another CF card or two and some spare batteries
from pricespy.co.nz flashcards.co.nz is the only place you will need to shop
Canon Powershot A70 $498.00 8xAA batteries $40 256mb CF card $99 and delivered free.
And what do you know? I bought exactly this combo (with a little bonus chucked in coz we're mandrake buddies ;-00, you too can get super deals if you switch to Mandrake :-8) from Jason this afternoon. I have spent the afternoon playing and am so far very impressed. GPhoto is not too bad...
While a man of impulse (<24hrs from idea to purchase to purchase...), I do like to do some investigation, and after searching the net for reviews and stuff, found that this camera was very popular and well thought of. It is one of the world's best sellers and has excellent battery usage. It had everything we wanted (apart from a few hundred thousand pixels) and looked like it could be got for a reasonable price.
Who has the cheapest powershot a70 in NZ? flashcards. Who has the cheapest compactflash memory in NZ? flashcards. Who has a salesman how is prepared to drive to your house (if needed), pretty much straight away? Flashcards. Who runs the hottest distro out there? Dude from flashcards.
Sold.

ps I must also note that I had VERY high expectations as I now realise that the cameras I had seen photos from before were all $1500+ and/or professional (big ugly munters) devices. So far I have not been disappointed, but I am now a little more realistic about seeing the hairs on the legs of the mite on the leg of the bee... It is just getting the damn thing still enough! After a couple of hours I can get reasonable definition on my own hairs though, so you never know ;-0
