On my Mdk 8.2 partition, KDE 2.2.2, automount allows accessing a floppy disk by clicking on the desktop icon for it, once the disk has been inserted into the drive. When disk mounting is successful, the disk icon has a green triangle added in the lower right corner.
However, to remove the disk and retain what has been written to it, one must remember to (right-click for menu and) "Unmount" the disk first. Otherwise you'll get read errors like you've reported, because Linux has not released the filesystem cleanly. The green triangle disappears if you have unmounted the disk properly. Have you noticed it before disk ejection?
Jason or someone else might like to confirm this holds for Mdk 9.1
Good luck
