If long battery life (up to 6 hours!!) and bells and whistles is what you're after I could suggest an Apple iBook. If you know a secondary school teacher you can get the basic G4 model for $2150. They are lovely to look at, have everything you need bar wireless (an Airport card is worth about $150) and the ppc linux distros run very well due to the very narrow range of Apple hardware. Plus Mac OS X is based on BSD so there's quite a bit of OSS available, eg Safari which uses the KHTML engine.
