She never had "other software". When we got the computer, I told her that we were doing everything Linux.
She was never rude to me, only to Linux. But then, who isn't rude to their software now and then?


CUPS is my best guess. It runs as root.


Hmm. I'm using it in very different setups but it hasn't done something
like that to me, though I do have other "issues" with CUPS (grumble).
My systems don't set the permissions of /tmp or /var/tmp on boot.

Well, it's only done the /var/tmp thing once. I don't know why though. You are not the only on that has issues with CUPS, of course. Witness Eric Raymond's recent CUPS UI rant episode.
