I wouldn't usually post software announcements to random user group
mailing lists unless it was particularly on-topic.

In this case, given that there seems to be a fair bit of interest in NTP
use on this list, I figured it's probably worth posting about.

The OpenBSD team have recently developed a replacement NTP daemon. The
nice things about this one are:
        * it's simple
        * doesn't run as root (thanks to privilege separation)
        * was written with an eye for security
        * it's free (BSD licensed)

Like what has been done with OpenBSD's SSH suite, a portability project
has been set up for the NTP daemon. The official website will be:
http://www.openntpd.org, but the latest snapshots of the portable code
are available at: http://www.zip.com.au/~dtucker/openntpd for now.

It's not feature complete, but OpenNTPd will already fulfill most user
requirements. Note that the daemon was only checked in to OpenBSD -HEAD
a couple of weeks ago, and the portable version is only a few days old.
Having said that, it's quite stable already.

Have fun.

Cheers,
-mjg
