well i can't offer any further clarity beyond what i mentioned below, and the mandrake install is gone now anyway. certainly i'm not disputing what is being said (i'm hardly qualified to!) though at the same time know what i saw with df a few months ago and that i only had one partition mounted in fstab. seems there's another piece of the puzzle missing, and i have no idea what it is . . . i'm fine with not having the answer to this one.
