Try the same invocation with the addition of '-m' to the parameter list.
If that doesn't work, temporarily uninstall libdb1-compat--make a note
to reinstall it at a later phase of the upgrade. When you removed
libdb1-compat earlier (per your original email), the subsequent
incorrect invocation of apt-get reinstalled it as shown by the initial
output.
> $ sudo apt-get install kernel-image-2.6.8-1-sparc32
Don't bother with 2.6 until you've got your system upgraded and working
with 2.4.
