It's not relevant. I get the same error on my recently installed SuSE 9.1. I haven't looked into it.
I found that SuSE set /dev/null to 644. It should be 666:
As root:
chmod 666 /dev/null
Also, I could not get Kinternet to work at all. Instead, I used kppp and made pppd setuid root, plus world write access to a couple of files I think.
Oh, and I've got an external modem. Thank goodness.
