You can use tar to get around that problem, tar -pvczf /mnt/floppy/filename.tar.gz /home/rob/Xinstall.sh will create a tarball with permissions intact on the floppy drive. When you extract it onto another machine with tar -pvxzf /mnt/floppy/filename.tar.gz the file will appear with the permissions as they were on the original machine. This method should work no matter which filesystem is on the floppy disk.
