I gather the term is "WISP" - Wireless Internet Service Provider. Nice :-)

I'd be interested to hear more about this. I'm also interested in whether anyone's considered doing a sort of a neighbourhood WISP in the suburbs. Taking it a step further, I was thinking about the idea of having a neighbourhood terminal/server setup where, for the cost of some wireless hardware and a monthly fee, you could have access to a nice, fast internet connection, basic office software, email, etc.

It's the sort of service that the big telcos would have difficulty providing as it requires a degree of network "intelligence" closer to their clients than the local exchange (although there's no reason why an exchange just has to be a dumb "router" ...).

This would have all the advantages of a terminal/server setup, i.e., ability to use older hardware, no support issues, perhaps appealing to people who didn't want to have to worry about such things.

I haven't looked into any of the details yet, but I'd be interested in any comments.

Cheers, Andrew.

Now we are talking, i'd like to help sort out a community wireless network going in the central city.

*sigh* sitting in victoria square with wireless access sounds like fun.

Me and two friends are currently planning to offer free/cheap internet in the square. I will reply to the list when this is finished.
