iirc there was a longish and rather muddled thread on the ltp list about the 
fact that there are two kernel calls which have been removed from the kernel 
@ approximately the 2.6.8 point, so the slmodem driver won't install 
properly.
There is a patch which purports to fix this problem.
I have it on my lappie, but have not tried to make it or install it.

Have you tried to make it go on uber-recent kernels?
i.e. > 2.6.8
