Just went over suse-amd64, similar thread:

   Try YaST --> System --> Power Management, there are various settings
   there to try.

   Lew.. does running poweroff yourself work right?  If not, add
   apm=smp-power-off
   to your grub (or lilo) config as a kernel option for the next boot.. there 
was
   (is?) an issue with smp and powering off like that which that option used to
   fix.

   Or maybe it's just apm=power-off now..
   9.2 might've added that before on it's own.

If you're on 9.1 the kernel options might not apply to your kernel.
