You get what you pay for to some extent, and customers who want to save
every last cent on a product do force resellers into this method of
operation.

Then again, I have no problems waiting a day or three for a common item,
like a hard drive... It's the two-week wait for a standard item that's
annoying.

How else can it be done with goods that are so quickly obsolete?  Either 
large stocks and large prices or just-in-time and low prices.
