PS for completeness you might like to note that some compaq boxes will
only take slimline cdrom drives, which can be expensive and/or hard to
get.

All of mine are of this sort, although the only one that regularly needs a 
cdrom drive is my wife's PIII 650, which came complete with slimline
cdrom. 

the current black/silver models in C Future seem to have full height CD
drives in them, and look a bit like this one:
