Well I can't quite explain why I had what I had happening, now that I
understand what was happening.
My session manager setting was "restore previous session", not "restore
manually saved session". And with nothing in the autostart folder, I'd
expect that having closed the programmes would result in them NOT
opening next session, and I had closed them in numerous sessions.
Now that I've "started with an empty session" once, and now set things
how I want, it is now working OK, though I did have a couple of
programmes NOT start from autostart on 2 ocassions yesterday. Today it
all seems to be behaving so I'm a happy linux user again. Though I do
have more questions . . .
