There was some issue with time keeping and CPU sclaing down for power saving in modern Athlons, but yours are older Pentiums. Try turning off CPU frequency scaling or whatever it's called, the thing that shuts down the CPU when not in use. Some sort of BIOS/kernel ACPI problem. Try different BIOS settings related to this?
