I'm not really sure how it all should work. How do I go about > getting a domain name, and 'connecting' it to my dynamic IP? Apart from using a static IP (Telstra, or dunno how) which would be trivial, you can't have the name servers for the domain in question on the same dynamic IP, and therefore need some dynamic DNS services a la dyndns.org. No cost if you use one of dyndns's subdomains, not free if you want to connect your own domain. Advantages of self-hosting: unlimited disk space, unlimited server logs, scripting, and all the software you're most familiar with. Unlimited free support on 0800 127-0-0-1. Disadvantages: you need a spare box, and play sysadmin. Choose $DISTRO which provides updates for you, so you can auto-install. Risk of getting dosed, so traffic use monitoring essential (unless you're on flat).
