The standard would be to run iperf in a controlled environment.  You need an
iperf server on one side, and an iperf client on the other.

An easier way is to ftp get something when the link is otherwise unused.
ftp is better than http/scp/most other stuff for returning an actual
throughput.

Also check out the gui in IPCop - it should have some sort of "current
throughput" page somewhere.
