One would hope so, but something is not quite right otherwise he'd be
connecting straight away. So I'm suggesting we start the diagnosis at the
bottom of the heap of festering matter that is a WinModem. btw, anybody know
_definitively_ what make and model it is?

otoh, the problem could well be as simple as an incorrectly typed username or
password. That would be well worth a quick check before going further. Yes, I
know it's a bit of an insult to suggest such a simple thing, but I _have_
seen it after wasting several hours on one particular installation.

hint, Install minicom so you can talk directly to the modem, and see it's
exact responses.
