Minicom is not required, in kppp use;

Configure --> Modem --> Terminal

Why not use the kppp Query Modem rather than terminal?
if it starts to display AT commands then the modem IS detected and you can see
and alter those commands after initialisation.

close this down then retest to see if what you've entered is still present
(therefore it'll still be there when you go online).

my thoughts only.

The query modem button which is on the same dialogue box will also yield
interesting information.
