Well, when I first got into *nix, there were two choices of free *nix - 386BSD and Linux. Linux was somewhat cheaper at the time - it required a few less floppies. That's the only reason why I'm a regular Linux user and not a *BSD user today. I've never seen the point in "religious wars" on distros or OS types.
