Andrew, yes the motherboard (WinFast 760GXK8MB) does have the pins for

a socket for it(I think)
Ok. I assume you actually mean COM2:, but this is good news.
I just downloaded a copy of the manual via Google, and indeed, the header
is a 10-pin (2x5) header with pin 10 missing. The header is pin-for-pin
matched with a 9-pin D connector (i.e. pin 1 on header is pin 1 on DB9, pin
2 is pin 2 etc.). I might have one in my junk drawer, if not, then they
can be found... (anyone?)
Since you have the manual for the motherboard, do you have anything else?
Maybe the box it came in? It is possible (but increasingly less likely)
that there is a little cable in a bag in the box. As you can no doubt
imagine it is quite short as it has to go from the header on the
motherboard to a hole somewhere on the back panel. Regarding mounting, you
will probably find some holes pre-punched in the case, and all you have to
do is push out a small piece of metal filling the hole. But, you only need
to do that when you have the cable.
Regarding Thunderbird, I have that installed in Windows, should I go
ahead and install in it in Linux?
Err, it's up to you. I can't answer that question.
