Well, I just booted up with a knoppix dvd, and used the correct UUID in 
/boot/grub/menu.lst. But what happens with the next upgrade - is the wrong UUID 
going to be used again, and, if so, why?

That's my real worry. I've set this machine up with a failsafe bootmenu entry 
that won't be rewritten, but the core question is why is it using the wrong 
UUID, and where's it getting it from?

And also, on a slightly different note, I tried to set this machine up for 
remote access via ssh, and found that xtra have crippled their free adsl 
router, stopping me from setting the necessary port forwarding up at all! Now 
that hacked me off big time. I suppose I'll need to reflash the router now.
