OT perhaps, but a wonderful little story none the less. A very similar
storm erupted some time ago over a vulnerability in wireless drivers.
IIRC and ironically enough, George Ou was involved in that one too
(though I think he was actually trying to be one of the good guys).

As to being sloppy, if you carefully read the postings by Ed Bott you
might notice that while he has much to say, he appears every bit as
given to overstatement and misstatement as he attempts to claim Gutmann is.

Gutmann however is at the least very entertaining. The one puzzling
aspect of it all, is why it took so long for Bott and Ou to make their
noise when Gutmann's paper had been widely distributed (and read) for
quite some time prior to the noise machine kicking in. I would be very
surprised if the Gutmann paper had not been read by them prior to his
more recent talks.

Perhaps it was a slow news week.

Still, it's like the many stories about the great sales of Vista
(apparently 40 million and that quicker than expected) and how people
love it etc etc. Yet, Dell have apparently had to make XP available,
again, due to customer demand. And Microsoft have now had to extend the
shelf (read sales) life of XP by an extra 5 months. So, if Vista is so
grand and selling so well, why?

Cheers
L
