Yes - that's its main downside.

However I bet almost everyone here is using a caching nameserver (dnsmasq, djbdns, bind, or whatever is in your router) so only the first lookup is slow.

BTW are you referring to alien and terminator as the slow DNS servers?
Xtra now use dnsc1.xtra.co.nz (202.27.158.40) and dnsc2.xtra.co.nz (202.27.156.72) for normal usage. If you have the old ones then consider updating.
