Unfortunately, listed in the release notes, everything
on this edition was compiled with GCC 3.2 .

GCC 3.2 breaks certain old programs originally compiled
with GCC 2.95.X or later, or earlier.

Therefore, KDE that came out had to be able to compile
with this version, along with every other program.

So, if you attempted to run a install a programs from
source, and unless they were 'dooable' in GCC 3.2, those
programs are hooped.

The problems were the result of attempting to uninstall programs that were part of the base
configuration of RH R8.0 using rpm. GCC 3.2 never even had a chance to play a roll
in the system hoark(s)... The source code(s) were never compiled, Nobody got that far...

Also, you can install multiple versions of a compiler on a single machine, but it's a PITA
and can be dangerous even if your careful. I'd never do it to satisfy a disto's quirks.
