gimp question

[Net Llama!]

I'm attempting to make transparent images (where the background color 
does not appear on a web page) in the gimp, and its just not working. 
I'm sure that its doable, but i can't quite figure out how.  Anyone know 
the magic?  I'd prefer to use PNG, but i'll go with another format if 
neccesary.  thanks.
