SuSE is nice if you want a nice configuration GUI and quick install. Gentoo is nice if you want to keep the system up-to-date with 'minimal' effort. You never reinstall Gentoo to stay with the current release (if you do reasonable incremental updates). If the guy will be keeping the system up on his own, SuSE is the way to go. If you are doing it, Gentoo would be my choice. I like and use both. In our delivered systems it is now SuSE (was Caldera).
