Yea, that is more likely the issue.  I did a bit more digging after my
first suggestion and found that the new aic7xxx module in 2.4.x kernels
has some problems, and what you're experiencing is one of them.
Take a trip here:
http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_search

and run a search on that 'abort' error that you got, and you'll find
quite a bit of discussion on the Linux kernel mailing list (amongst
other places) on this problem.  THey talk a bit about using the old
aic7xxx module instead of this new one as a possible temporary fix.
