What error (if any) did you get?
And what did you change in the way of modules that should go into initrd?
And did you configure to allow an initrd ram?
For instance, yest I recompiled but missed the initrd option... On boot it
couldn't mount my reiserfs partition because reiserfs was a module and
although it was sitting in initrd, initrd wasn't being used. <slap>
