For me it's an overemphasised arial-black, slightly blurry but readable. I am 
on kdelibs 2.1.2

message header reports:

Content-Type: text/plain;
 charset="iso-2022-jp"


On kmail auto-encoding it uses the JIS character set. If you set your 
encoding to iso-8859-1 (Western European), it solves this problem, and is a 
'good fit' for most email coming in.
