It seems that the problem I was experiencing, according to the author of
xanim, was that some of the files on the web site (Jet Propulsion Lab) were
made on a Mac and transferred to the web site missing some important files.
Here is his letter regarding the problem file:
====================================================
Turns out this movie is unplayable by anything(including a Macintosh).
It's completely missing all of the resource information(ie headers that
indicate which codecs, where the frames are, etc).

Who ever transferred it from a Mac, forget to convert it to a single-forked
file and then only transferred the .mdat file, leaving the critical .rsrc
file behind.

I wrote to the web master (curator at the JPL) and informed her of this
problem.
xanim seems to play quicktime files fine when compiled on caldera 2.4. I
really have had very little trouble compiling programs on my caldera box, as
opposed to my RH 7.1 box.
BTW, I am doing all this to try to make helper applications work with my
various browsers. I hope to have a browser independent way to conveniently
play various types of links soon.
