yeah, there's a general bad mood permeating the force. and we might
all want to wait for the other shoe to drop wrt code red -- i don't
think that what we saw thursday was all of it, or perhaps even the
bigger part. almost unnoticed in the little dab of noise about it was
the fact that it is subject to some interesting changes -- i think
that when it wakes up, we're going to see a new attack several orders
of magnitude bigger. and i think the whitehouse.gov thing was a
smokescreen by the worm's developers to (successfully, it turns out)
distract us from whatever they're really up to. and believe me, the
propagation of the second version of the thing on thursday was quite
bad enough, producing what amounted to a ddos attack that was really
noticeable. (on the cable modem here, the incoming light was flashing
like a neon light, so frequent were the attempts to get in. nothing
made it, and had anything made it it would have found nothing to do.)
i think that we're going to see what amounts to a broad-spectrum ddos
soon, that effectively takes down much of the net. and it seems to me
as if the internet has been much slower since then.
there's something going on, and i think it's probably tied to the g-8
meeting. and it doesn't matter how invulnerable your machine is, if
everything upstream is tied in knots.
