apart from llllllllllama's perfectly sensible sugeestion, there is a problem
with one of the kernel releases 2.4.4 from memory, but don't quote me.
Since the cd rom is not on the same cable as the hd, what else have you got
on that cable? LS120 devices are notorious for causing this, and early
versions of ZIP 100's ditto (no pun intended).
Change the cd to slave (/dev/hdd) many early versions were not full atapi
master devices.
Also, and of course, it could genuinely be a bad cd drive. It's not _that_
unusual.
