you can backport usb* into 2.2. kernels and the usb.org site contains info,
patches, documentation to do so. My memory tells me > 2.2.17 is as close to a
usb kernel as you are going to get. (no need to patch eg)

webcams are a special class which utilise the video4linux (v4l) kernel
drivers rather than the major component tree of usb. If v4l is compiled in
your kernel (quick check, modprobe videdev) , answer = maybe.

There's actually a very long answer I could give you which would take up
space, essentially, the driver's owner _might_ backport, and he *might* be
free from the restrictions of the usb api (which essentially requires 2.4.x
to work in full technicolor) . There's an even longer answer about usb
general which cut short says you really should move to 2.4.x if you want to
play the new game of NO modules.conf and NO 'kernel' drivers as such.

Those who know me know that I've ranted and raved about the contradiction in
terms between a kernel, and #$@)(*&)&$ drivers. 20meg of 'kernel' source
beggars belief. It competes with Microsoft's 10 million lines.

*finally* drivers will be divorced from the kernel. You can put money on it,
and you can *finally* expect oems to supply drivers as a result. A long time
coming. Too long. However, to answer your question, usb drivers are
intended to be agnostic to the kernel. It is usb which can, or cannot,
provide the 'feature' back into 2.2.x

snapscan
fbtv

gui.....

xawtv
xsnapscan
xcam
gimp

A question to you. What keeps you on a 2.2 x kernel? Fear of compiling?
Stabiity? Time?
