I've downloaded the Caldera EWorkstation 3.1 ISO, burned to a CD, and
used the RPMS from it to upgrade a pre-exisiting eDesktop 2.4 system.
Things seem to be working fine on that system for a while now.

Yesterday I took that ISO and went to do a fresh install on my NEC
laptop system.

The whole install went just fine, no complaints. After install I let
the system reboot, it seems to hang at checking file-systems. I made
sure the CD was out and powered off and back on. Boot up goes fine,
but again just hangs at Checking file-systems with no disk activity
what so ever.

Flipping through a few Alt screens yields interesting words of
frustration.

F7 (graphical) shows:

Ah, the joy of installing from scratch. Where's my hammer?
