Slackware puts the kernel under / and calls it vmlinuz, the (original)
System.map goes in /boot. When building a kernel with slackware (i use
slack 8), instead of 'make bzImage' use 'make bzlilo' and everything to
do with moving and renaming the old version out and the new in is done
for you. It even runs /sbin/lilo when it's done, all you need to do is
make an entry in /etc/lilo.conf that points to the old kernel
(/vmlinuz.old) and it's System.map (now under /System.old)

I found it to be a no-frills (for sure) but quick install routine...
once I'd read... well, you know, TFM and all that ;-)

Now, getting Apsfilter to setup ANY of the printers I have here is a
whole 'nuther story =(

Yes, like LiLo or GRUB =) I've been bit by bootmagic once before...
never again!

Ken, on the slackware site there is a link
(http://www.slackware.com/book/) to some essential documentation WRT
slackware. You might want to check it out as it helps clarify a few
things...
