Had this problem many moons ago and after that I always remake the icons for 
the cd drives and floppy. They differing distros have their own esoteric 
mannner of mounting the drives and in many cases they fail. I make my own 
mount points in / for the drives and them alter /etc/fstab to conform the the 
normal mount:: /dev/hdc /cdrom iso9660 ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0
never had a problem since.

addenda:: If I want to use DAO I ensure that the drives are on differing ide 
busses, also that the mount is for scsi (/dev/scd0 or sda0) and the relevant 
scsi options are modularised in the kernel.
