Aye..  I see no mention of a whois.conf on either COL31 or OpenServer5 ....

I did find this via google search for 'whois.conf':

-a snippet from some BSD pages:
      Whois uses the server listed in /etc/whois.conf, or the default NIC
     (whois.internic.net).  This can be overridden by the command line option:
      -h


It sounds as though you stick a single line in this file, specifying the 
whois server you wish to query, if it's not whois.internic.net and you are 
getting tired of typing the 'h option ...
