And if it's not that simple at least you can change the default there from 5 to 2 and boot into console mode. Make sure that you don't have a link in /etc/rc2.d to kdm or xdm, because on my install that directory had S99xdm. It took me a while to figure out why runlevel 2 was giving me a gui.
