That may be the case. In my estimation however, ubuntu simply isn't
designed for this task as being one of its primary uses, and my
preference is towards systems that are =).

I tried ubuntu for about a year before finally throwing it out again,
no OS warring, it just doesn't work with me or how I function. I only
tried it (again, after having used it for about 3 months a few years
ago ) because people keep telling me its not as bad as I make out it
is, so I re-tried just to see for myself.

Ubuntu may be convenient and practical for some, just like windows and
mac are convenient and practical for others, but I do not count myself
among those people. =)

My personal experience in this matter suggests that if your goal is
for more than a "Simple Desktop" which you don't want to ever get
dirty with, and you're not likely to be doing much changing of things,
perhaps it is the right thing for you. However, in my estimation if
you're trying to achieve something like a router or a database server,
can I please humbly suggest you use something else ;). Debian is
somehow much better at some of these tasks, despite the seemingly
minimal differences in OS implementations.

Personally, the best part of Debian vs Ubuntu is it doesn't use
'upstart', have fought and lost several battles with that, the last of
which left the machine unbootable for reasons I can't debug, which is
confusing to me, as I didn't remove anything Ubuntu considered
essential :/ , and that last battle broke the last straw that made me
ditch it. Its not like I intended for it to be rebooted, its supposed
to be hands free, but when you have a Magnitude 7 earthquake and your
power goes out for a week, well, you don't get much choice =P .

Context: Experience now involves beloved deadrat, mandrake ( back when
it as called that ), debian, ubuntu, gentoo, freebsd and openbsd. (
Using gentoo or debian for desktop/workspace setups depending on the
timeframe I've got and the nature of the work )
